Dr. Mandal
I’ve always been surrounded by talented, brilliant, dedicated and determined people people all my life. Like minds always attract each other
Yesterday I was contacted by a physician who lives in Michigan who read an article that was written about my practice in September 2007. Her questions reminded me of when I first started my business, I was so scared yet excited at the same time. It’s now been two years since I’ve been working as a physician on my own. Lord knows I’ve had my trials and tribulations already. A broken arm/elbow with paralysis. Relocating after 10 months since I wasn’t happy with my first office. Accruing a panel of 1000 patients isn’t easy, but I did it. And it’s continuing to expand exponentially.
Most of my patients now come by word-of-mouth. I do very little advertising and marketing. Out of the 1000 or so patients that I have, most of them are women. I’ve tailored my business to women’s health, something that I never seriously concentrated on when I was in medical school or residency. I love it.
About three years ago, my friend Sean and I went to get our palms read. It was his birthday and we just came back from a gala at the Waldorf-Astoria. It was past midnight but we still rang the doorbell. The psychic looked at my palms and said that I wasn’t meant to be at the mid-level position where I was at that time, I was meant to be doing bigger and better things. That was what started it all. Literally. I had thought about starting a business in the past, but felt too overwhelmed and intimidated. It was the very next week when I started doing research on building a medical practice from scratch. From there, being on my own has inspired me to create, write, dream and hope.
Last week I was also contacted to participate in the Gay Life Expo at the Javits Center in November. I was perplexed since I’m not gay and I don’t have a large panel of gays or lesbians. Somehow they heard about me through the circuit and felt that I have something to offer at the show. 10,000 people a day for two days. I’m already sweating thinking about all the hard work I have to put into this whole thing. http://www.gaylifeexpo.com
So, for anyone who may be reading this post and thinking about building your own ideal micropractice, take it from me. All you need is a sprinkle of hope, a dash of imagination, a splash of purpose, a dollop of dreams and a whole lot of heart. If you build it, they will come.
